“HUTAN” is the Indonesian word for “forest.”
In this game, players compete to create the most vibrant rainforest by planting flowers, growing trees, and attracting native wild animals.
In "Hutan," players take turns drafting cards from a shared market and placing combinations of flowers, as indicated on the cards, onto their board, which is divided into several areas with a grid.
Flowers must be placed adjacent to or on top of already placed flowers, forming a continuous chain.
When an entire area is filled with flowers of the same color, the area is "completed" and scores points at the end of the game.
Empty "incomplete" areas or "mixed" areas with flowers of different colors will result in negative points, so careful card selection and flower placement are crucial.
When flowers of the same color are stacked, a tree can be placed on top of the flowers, and trees also score points.
Furthermore, if all squares in an area have flowers of the same color and a tree is placed, it becomes a "perfect habitat," attracting animals corresponding to the flower color and fostering a rich rainforest.
At the end of 9 rounds, the player with the most points wins. However, the conditions for scoring placements are quite challenging, and there are diverse scoring criteria. Thus, despite its simple system, strategic placement is necessary for victory.
The game also offers a variety of play experiences, with simplified family game rules, advanced games introducing "ecosystem cards" as an additional scoring source, solo play rules, and various achievement challenges, making it a highly replayable and visually vibrant board game.
