Monchhichi was launched in 1974 by Sekiguchi, a plush toy manufacturer.
With a plush body and a soft vinyl face and limbs, it was considered a completely new type of doll at the time and caused an explosive boom upon its release.
Exports began the following year, and Monchhichi became popular worldwide.
After that, sales were temporarily suspended outside of Paris from 1985, but due to strong demand from many fans, sales resumed in 1996.
In 2004, for Monchhichi's 30th anniversary, a wedding ceremony was held for Monchhichi-kun and Monchhichi-chan at a hotel in Maihama, Chiba Prefecture, and 30 fans were invited by lottery.
On April 9, 2016 (Heisei 28), "Monchhichi Park" (official name: Nishishinkoiwa 5-chome Park) was newly opened by Katsushika City on the former site of the Sekiguchi Doll House (formerly the Sekiguchi factory, a Katsushika City Registered Tangible Folk Cultural Property).
Chairman Sekiguchi and Monchhichi-kun and Monchhichi-chan mascots attended the opening ceremony.
In the park, Monchhichi illustrations are depicted in tiles on the floor, and photos of Monchhichi and Bebichichi are wrapped on the exterior walls of the restrooms, in addition to play equipment such as slides and health equipment such as jump touch.
From June 2017 (Heisei 29), manhole covers designed with Monchhichi were introduced around JR East's Shin-Koiwa Station in Katsushika City, Tokyo.
In 2024, Monchhichi celebrates its 50th anniversary since its birth, and even after more than 50 years since its launch, it continues to be loved by many people not only in Japan but around the world in the current Reiwa era.
