Monchhichi was launched in 1974 by Sekiguchi, a plush toy manufacturer.

With a plush body and a soft vinyl face and limbs, it was considered a completely new type of doll at the time and caused an explosive boom upon its release.
Exports began the following year, and Monchhichi became popular all over the world.

After that, sales were temporarily suspended outside of Paris from 1985, but due to the demands of many fans, sales resumed in 1996.
In 2004, for Monchhichi's 30th anniversary, a wedding ceremony for Monchhichi-kun and Monchhichi-chan was held at a hotel in Maihama, Chiba Prefecture, and 30 fans were invited by lottery.

On April 9, 2016 (Heisei 28), Monchhichi Park (officially known as Nishi-Shin-Koiwa 5-chome Park) was newly opened by Katsushika City on the former site of the Sekiguchi Dollhouse (formerly the Sekiguchi factory, a Katsushika City Registered Tangible Folk Cultural Property).
Chairman Sekiguchi, Monchhichi-kun, and Monchhichi-chan mascots attended the opening ceremony.
In the park, Monchhichi's pictures are depicted in tiles on the floor, and photos of Monchhichi and Bebichhichi are wrapped around the exterior wall of the restroom. It also has playground equipment such as slides and health equipment such as jump touch.

From June 2017 (Heisei 29), manhole covers designed with Monchhichi were introduced around JR East Shin-Koiwa Station in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, Monchhichi has been loved by many people not only in Japan but also around the world, even now in the Reiwa era, more than 50 years after its launch.
