Monchhichi was launched in 1974 by Sekiguchi, a plush toy manufacturer.
With a plush body and a soft vinyl face, hands, and feet, it was considered a completely new type of doll at the time and caused an explosive boom upon its release.
Exports began the following year, and Monchhichi became popular worldwide.
After that, sales were temporarily suspended outside of Paris from 1985, but due to popular demand from many fans, resales began in 1996.
In 2004, for Monchhichi's 30th anniversary year, a wedding ceremony for Monchhichi-kun and Monchhichi-chan was held at a hotel in Maihama, Chiba Prefecture, and 30 fans were invited by lottery.
On April 9, 2016 (Heisei 28), "Monchhichi Park" (official name: Nishishinkoiwa Gochome Park) was newly established by Katsushika City on the site of the former Sekiguchi Dollhouse (former Sekiguchi factory, a registered tangible folk cultural property of Katsushika City).
The opening ceremony was attended by Chairman Sekiguchi, Monchhichi-kun, and Monchhichi-chan in character costumes.
In the park, Monchhichi illustrations are depicted in tiles on the floor, photos of Monchhichi and Bebichichi are wrapped on the exterior walls of the restrooms, and playground equipment such as slides and health equipment such as jump-touch are installed.
From June 2017 (Heisei 29), manhole covers designed with Monchhichi were introduced around JR East Shinkoiwa Station in Katsushika City, Tokyo.
In 2024, Monchhichi will celebrate its 50th anniversary. More than 50 years after its release, it continues to be loved by many people not only in Japan but all over the world, even in the current Reiwa era.
