Series: Japanese Cities - Enjoy Japan with Puzzles
Everyone has something they'd like to enjoy as a puzzle from their local area, whether it's places, objects, food, or customs known only to locals. This series aims to select items that come close to that, catering to those from or currently living in those regions. Asakusa Kaminarimon is one of Tokyo's most famous spots, bustling with many foreign tourists.
This is the main gate at the entrance to the approach path leading to Senso-ji Temple, officially called "Furaijinmon" (Wind God and Thunder God Gate). In the center of the gate hangs a large red lantern, 3.9m high, 3.3m in diameter, and weighing approximately 700kg (as of 2025), inscribed with "Kaminarimon." The lantern itself is made by gluing approximately 300 sheets of 100% kozo Japanese paper from Fukui Prefecture onto a bamboo frame from Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, and is replaced about every 10 years.
