Japanese Cities: This puzzle features famous landmarks, landscapes, and objects associated with various places in Japan. Series: Japanese Cities – Enjoy Japan through Puzzles.
Everyone must have something specific to their local area—places, things, foods, or customs—that they would enjoy as a puzzle. This series is for those from or living in those areas, featuring carefully selected items close to such local preferences. At Futami Okitama Shrine in Futami-cho, Ise City, a ritual purification (misogi) takes place in the ocean each year on the summer solstice, where participants worship the sunrise appearing between the Meoto Iwa (husband and wife rocks). People visiting Ise Grand Shrine have, since ancient times, purified their bodies and minds by performing misogi at Futamiura and worshipping the sunrise between the Meoto Iwa. Participants wear white robes, and after the ceremony, they enter the sea bathed in the glorious sunrise rising between the Meoto Iwa, cleansing their bodies and minds, and praying for good health and family safety. Futamiura, where the Meoto Iwa are located, is also known as a famous spot for sunrises, becoming a special place that connects purification with the sunrise. There is also a theory that the summer solstice, being the longest day of the year, was believed to be when the sun's power was at its maximum, leading to the sacred view of the summer solstice sunrise between the Meoto Iwa.
