Nachi Falls is Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall, with water plummeting 133 meters from a 13-meter-wide cascade into the basin below. The thunderous roar, spray, and grandeur of the falls inspired immense reverence, making it a place of worship and eventually formally enshrined as Hiro Shrine. This shrine has no main hall; worshippers pray facing Nachi Falls, which is the shrine's object of worship (the dwelling place of a deity). From the Otaki viewing platform, you can see Nachi Falls and the surrounding primeval forest from a slightly elevated position. Water drawn from the falls' basin is believed to bring longevity and good health. Nachi Falls is counted among Japan's Three Great Waterfalls, along with Kegon Falls and Fukuroda Falls.
