At the time, Mr. Sakai himself conducted thorough research at the filming location, perfectly recreating every detail of the suit used for filming.
29 years later, aiming for even greater perfection, an elite team from Kaiyodo's sculpting team, under Mr. Sakai's complete supervision, has resurrected it as a pre-painted finished product, incorporating new data! This product, with its detailed brush-up, can be considered Mr. Sakai's new work, made possible only now. The original prototype was digitized using the latest 3D scanning method (CT scan), enlarged from its original size of 190mm to 320mm, and then direct molds were created by burning out 3D printer output. By producing only with original molds and not using mass production molds duplicated from these, the aim was to reproduce the essence of the prototype as faithfully as possible. This minimizes deformation and shrinkage often seen in soft vinyl products made using the orthodox lost-wax method.
Of course, the coloring is also fully supervised by Mr. Sakai. They succeeded in mass production with a quality that looks as if a painting craftsman finished it by hand, rather than the conventional conveyor-belt painting process. You can enjoy a finish like a one-off piece, not the mechanical finish seen in previous mass-produced items.●Profile of Yuji Sakai
Japan's leading kaiju sculptor and a master of Godzilla sculpting.
He began his career as a professional sculptor after winning the Grand Prize at Kaiyodo's "Art Pla Taisho" (Art Plastic Model Grand Prix).
His sculpting ability is not limited to figures, but has also influenced the sculpting of actual Godzilla suits used in films. He participates as a staff member in kaiju films, including Godzilla, and continues to engage in a wide range of activities beyond the sculpting work at his own "Yuji Sakai Modeling Workshop Co., Ltd."
While he has sculpted the most Godzilla works, it is a well-known fact that he also demonstrates unparalleled skill in sculpting other kaiju, including Gamera.
In recent years, he has also overseen all kaiju at the "Eiji Museum" in Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, Eiji Tsuburaya's hometown, successfully reproducing the original Godzilla suit which no longer exists. In 2024, he was honored as a "Master Craftsman of Fukushima Prefecture" by Fukushima Prefecture, which selects outstanding technicians.
