Book Design/Design: Yuko Endo "Ichigorilla" is a memory game of matching pairs (like Concentration with playing cards) that anyone can play, but with an added twist. In addition to pairs of two identical cards, there are also sets of three, five, and other numbers of cards. For example, if there's a set of five cards, you can't collect them until you've found all five, making the decision of which set to aim for a tricky one. This creates anticipation for other players' mistakes, leading to an exciting game. In Japan, this type of matching game is often called "Nervous Breakdown" and is strongly associated with playing cards. However, in Europe, it's broadly known as a "memory game," with various versions available that differ in their illustrations and the total number of pairs. It's a classic genre for family games, and in the Japanese sense, it's similar to a "jigsaw puzzle."
The major difference is that in "memory games," the illustrations and number of pairs are carefully considered and adjusted so that remembering and forgetting create just the right amount of excitement and enjoyment. With playing cards, the bland suits and numbers, along with an enormous 52 cards and 26 pairs, can indeed feel like a "nervous breakdown" as the name suggests, leading to exhaustion. However, true memory games, with their charming illustrations and the perfect balance of "remembering/forgetting," are enjoyable for people of all ages.
This "Ichigorilla" is an "evolved memory game" that adds a further twist to the "memory game" with its exquisite illustrations and card quantities. 【Story】
Oh no! The gorilla brothers are missing. Are they here? Or there?
As you try to find them, Santa, yachts, confusing thieves, and even Goku appear one after another.
Can you find all the matching items? Tiles are scattered face down. Like in a game of Concentration, turn over tiles to find matches. Players take turns, and when it's your turn, you choose a tile and flip it over.
Each tile indicates how many identical pictures there are in total. For example, "Carrots" has 2 tiles, "Santa" has 3 tiles, and "Yacht" has 4 tiles. If you successfully flip over only identical pictures consecutively and find all the indicated number of tiles, you get all of them, with each tile counting as 1 point. For instance, if you find 2 "Carrot" tiles, you get them. If you consecutively flip 3 "Santa" tiles or 4 "Yacht" tiles, you can get 3 or 4 points at once.
If you flip over a different tile mid-way, you lose your turn. It's the next player's turn. Also, even if you make a match, it's still the next player's turn. Since each player gets only one chance per turn, you need to decide whether to aim for small items or go for a big win.
However, be careful as some illustrations are confusingly similar, such as gorillas and Goku, or Santa and thieves.
The game continues in this manner until all tiles have been collected, at which point the game ends. The player who has collected the most tiles wins.
