You lead a Roman gens (clan) and strive to increase your prestige through three eras. Rule the seven hills, build impressive monuments, avoid revolts, and seek the aid of Rome's most important figures... Which gens will be remembered for centuries to come?
In "Aeterna," you lead a Roman gens and strive to increase your prestige through three eras: the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. Your goal is to increase your influence in the city by helping to conquer provinces, controlling Rome's Seven Hills, and contributing to the construction of monuments and buildings. Riots on the hills under your direct control can put you at a disadvantage, so always be careful to keep the people motivated. If you can outmaneuver other players in majority control and manage your cards and resources effectively, your gens will be recorded in the history books as one of the most important in Rome.
Players draft monument and province cards by choosing one and passing the rest to the player on their left. Once drafting is complete, the game proceeds with players taking turns to perform various actions. These actions include "playing cards" and "recruiting figures" to gain resources, prestige, or card abilities by building monuments, conquering provinces, or gaining allies; "constructing buildings" to develop settlements on the hills that will shape Rome and send citizens to gain prestige; and "expanding influence on hills" by sending your citizens to those settlements to gain even more prestige.
Each of Rome's hills is a crucial element in the game. The more of your citizens are on a hill, the more prestige points you gain, but too many citizens on a hill can lead to unrest and ruin. Additionally, obtaining the position of Praefectus (governor) can give you a further advantage.
This is a highly anticipated new board game from Martin Wallace, who has created many masterpieces, featuring a simple yet thought-provoking system centered on card drafting, utilizing card effects, resource management, and competition for dominance on each hill, all set in the theme of "Eternal Rome."
