In the "Shinsei" series, retainers act as "living officers" who think and act on their own, bursting with energy. They support the daimyo with various "suggestions" as they strive for unification of the country.
When given territory, retainers develop it on their own initiative and, in times of war, lead troops to the battlefield.
In addition, there are "direct negotiations" where the daimyo and officers negotiate directly to retain or recruit, "rewards" to strengthen bonds and develop retainers by granting commendations, and "corps strategies" where corps commanders propose and coordinate strategically.
